March for Meals commemorates a historic day in March 1972: the birth of Meals on Wheels. When President Nixon signed a law amending the Older Americans Act of 1965, a new national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older was created…and the rest is history.
Meals on Wheels is one of Senior Resource Association’s flagship programs, initiated in our inaugural year. Since 1974, our home-delivery program has grown to serve more than 500 hot meals each weekday, along with frozen meals for the weekend.
During our annual March for Meals event, we invite local leaders, engaged neighbors and prospective volunteers to join a Meals on Wheels volunteer on their daily route. The ride-along allows guests to see firsthand the challenges facing isolated, food-insecure seniors right here in Indian River County.
Delivering hot, nutritious meals and wellness checks is an eye-opening experience and reminds us of the critical role Meals on Wheels plays in the lives of fragile, homebound, or needy seniors. More than a meal, this program opens a window into the lives of older adults, enabling SRA to offer additional services to those in greatest need.
